Glenn Hernandez is a Bay Area-based painter. He earned his Bachelor’s in Studio Art from St. Olaf College in 2002. For over a decade, he worked in the Games and Animation Industries as a Concept Artist/Art Director/Production Designer, all the while maintaining a part-time studio practice. In the summer of 2021, he built a studio at his home where he has gradually refocused his attention full-time towards painting. He draws inspiration from regular everyday subjects nearby where he lives with his wife and their two children.
Artist’s Statement
I’m intrigued by prehistory and the powerful forces that have shaped our world over time. As I observe the landscape around me, I’m struck by how the echoes of the past are still present, etched into the very surface of the land. These observations become ingrained in my muscle memory and are expressed on the surfaces that I prepare.
There’s a raw honesty in the ephemeral nature of land masses—the constant shifting, breaking, and reforming. This dynamic reflects the essence of life itself—a perpetual cycle of destruction and renewal.
Embedded within this cycle is the infrastructure of human civilization, often clinging to the illusion of permanence despite the inherent uncertainty of existence. This tension between stability and flux is something I grapple with as a painter, finding solace in the acceptance of uncertainty, even amidst my anxieties.
Nothing is guaranteed—not the picturesque suburban landscapes we’ve imposed upon nature, nor nature itself. Yet, within this uncertainty lies the truth, driving the heart of my practice.
