Pam Sheehan, born in 1956 in New York City, holds a MFA in painting from Lehman College and a BFA in sculpture from Parsons School of Design. She has apprenticed at the Johnson Atelier, Technical Institute for Sculpture. In addition she studied figurative sculpture with Angelo Frudakis and drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy. She has also worked with Myron Barnstone whose art school is modeled on the Renaissance discipline of instruction. In addition she received a one-year scholarship to the New York Academy.
Sheehan credits the plein air sketches of Constable, Corot and the Macchiaioli painters for being influential in her development. She explains, “To me, the integrity of a painting depends upon direct experience. Plein air painting is a means of charting an inner landscape by transposing both the subtle and dramatic outer shifts of weather on the terrain.”
Pam Sheehan has also become a master framemaker under Robert M. Kulickes‘s decade long tutelage.
Sheehan has taught at SUNY Rockland since 1984 and at Saint Thomas Aquinas and the Rockland Center for the Arts. She has been represented by Davis and Langdale Co. since 1998, and has received reviews from the New York Times, the New York Observer and the New Yorker.
Artist Statement
As a landscape painter, I work outdoors because I like the direct experience of seeing and feeling the shifts in light and weather. For my small figure studies I also prefer to work from life in a direct response approach.
Painting on small panels gives me the possibility, or the ideal, of completing a painting in one sitting. As a frame maker, I love small period frames that work so well to present my paintings.
In the process of becoming a committed painter I owe a large debt of gratitude to my mentors Bob Kulicke, Joel Levy and Myron Barnstone.
